10 Smart Upgrades to Consider

Did you know that almost half of the millennials in the US have at least one smart household product?

Whether you’re a millennial or not, you can’t deny that smart upgrades can take homes to the next level in terms of functionality and home redesign.

However, not all smart upgrades are going to be the right fit for your lifestyle. Since so many products are available in “smart” versions now, you have to decide what the best upgrades for you (and your family) will be.

Below, we are going to discuss some of the common home upgrades that you might find if you’re looking into smart home devices and products. Keep reading to get a better idea of which upgrades might be the perfect fit for your home.

1. Smart Lock

Smart locks are a type of lock that goes on your house and allows you to have keyless entry to your home. No matter where you are, you can lock or unlock your home with your smartphone. This makes it a very handy gadget to have if you have family members going in and out of your house throughout the day.

In addition to this, a lot of smart lock options can integrate with your smart speakers or general home security systems. In order to do this, you’ll need a smart home hub for total access.

3. Smart Video Doorbell

A smart video doorbell is similar to a traditional doorbell except it will show you who is at your door with an internet connection.

You can get a notification on your smartphone or other devices to see who is there. Many smart doorbells will also allow you to talk to the person so that you can communicate with them before answering the door.

Smart doorbells are a great option for convenience, but they are also an excellent safety feature. You can often store recorded video to review later if needed (like if your home is broken into or you have a package stolen).

5. Smart Smoke Detector

A smart smoke detector is a good idea for almost any homeowner, but it’s especially a wise investment if you’re away from your house often.

The main benefit of getting a smart smoke detector over a traditional one is that the smart version will notify your smartphone that there is smoke in your house and help you take action even if you’re not there.

There are also smart carbon monoxide detectors that do something similar. If you’re invested in the safety of your home, purchasing both of these smart devices for various rooms could be a good choice.

7. Smart Air Quality Monitor

If you’ve ever had concerns about the debris or contaminants that might be in your air, this is the smart device for you. It won’t clean the air, but it will tell you important information about what you’re breathing inside your home.

Some of the things that it will monitor for you include:

  • Humidity
  • Particulate matter
  • Carbon monoxide

9. Smart Lighting

Out of many of the smart upgrades on this list, smart lighting is one of the more inexpensive options that will easily make your home feel more high-tech. You can turn most light fixtures into smart light fixtures by connecting them to smart plugs or smart light bulbs.

Once you have them set up, you can integrate this with your smartphone or smart speaker to control the lights remotely. You can also set a timer or schedule for when they will turn off or not.

This is a huge benefit for people that want to save energy in their homes, but it’s also great for general room ambiance.

2. Smart Fridge

If you’re looking for an appliance upgrade, getting a smart fridge is one of the best options you could consider. Smart fridges have better temperature control, energy efficiency, and organization options.

New homes on the market can really benefit from having an appliance this handy to showcase.

Many smart fridges will make it easy for you when you’re at the grocery store by allowing you to see what’s inside your fridge from your smartphone. This way, you can easily see if you need to restock anything that you may have forgotten.

There are also smart fridges that are capable of storing recipes for you so that you can easily save your favorite recipes from the internet for future use. Your typical smart fridge can even read them out loud to you as you cook!

4. Smart Thermostat

Energy management is an essential part of home upgrades today as more people are concerned about the environment. In addition to that, people want to save money on their utility bills. A smart thermostat helps homeowners that want to focus on both of these areas.

There are actually a lot of options available now, so you can look for smart thermostats that have the features you want. Some smart thermostats are capable of unique actions, like energy tracking, sensing proximity, and geofencing.

6. Smart Toilet

Smart toilets are all about convenience! They have lids that open and shut on their own, flushing mechanisms that activate automatically, and less water waste than other toilet options.

Some of the smart toilet brands will also have other features, like a seat warmer, night light, self-cleaning nozzles, and Bluetooth or MP3 capabilities.

8. Smart Shades

Smart shades (or smart blinds) are window coverings that will open or close with an app or voice command. Instead of having to physically touch the shades to move them, they will do it electronically.

You can set them on a schedule if you’d like or simply use your smartphone to give them a command at a moment’s notice.

10. Smart Lawn Sprinklers

For people that have lawns to care for, a smart sprinkler is a great investment to save water, time, and energy. You won’t have to remember to water the lawn with this device, but you also don’t need to be concerned about the lawn getting flooded.

Smart lawn sprinklers are able to monitor the water levels for your lawn so that it becomes more of an afterthought. You can program the sprinklers with your smartphone or smart assistant. As the weather changes or your lawn conditions change, you’ll be able to easily upgrade these settings at the touch of a button.

Use Smart Upgrades to Improve Your Home

Although you may not need to get all of these smart upgrades, many of them can prove to be extremely useful for security, safety, or general convenience. Of course, if you’re planning to move into a new home, you can always make these upgrades over time.
