The new year is here, and one of your resolutions may be to make your home feel new and fresh. Many of us have been spending a lot of time at home for the last two years or so, and it may be time for a change. But what sorts of home décor trends should you look at when redecorating this year?
2022 home décor will be heavily influenced by the pandemic and will show our nostalgia for simpler, happier times. Read on to discover some of the new year décor trends coming in 2022 and how you can bring them into your own home.
Since the start of the pandemic, our homes have become our sanctuaries in all-new ways. We’ve had to spend more time at home than ever before, and our spaces have taken on new roles, doubling as WFH setups and homeschool centers. With all the stress and upheaval this has caused, people are turning to their bedrooms as spaces of peace and refuge.
This year, we’re going to see bedrooms being made over in gentle, relaxing tones. Soft duvets, extra pillows, and comfortable seating will begin to make appearances in our primary bedroom spaces. People want their bedrooms to be soft, relaxing, places to unwind and escape from the pressures of adulthood.
Another side effect of staying inside for so long is that many of us are starting to long for some natural beauty in our lives. You may miss traveling to see new, beautiful places, or you may miss the scenery of your local area. Many people have also begun gardening or keeping houseplants as a way to stay occupied during lockdowns.
As a result of this move back towards nature, we’re going to see more natural tones entering home décor in the coming year. In particular, greens will become one of the biggest 2022 color trends, as they’re soothing and reminiscent of the natural beauty around us. If you want to jump on this trend, go for sage and other green shades that incorporate a bit of brown for an easier, more natural look.
In the past few years, we’ve seen all-white kitchens dominate the home décor landscape. The stark beauty of these spaces has been lovely, and the bright color certainly does make kitchens feel larger and airier. But since being stuck inside all the time, people want something a little more joyous and less sterile.
This year, we’re going to start seeing more bright colors coming into kitchens. Cabinets painted with pops of color, islands in accent shades, and colorful kitchen walls will start to show up more and more regularly. People are also adding spots of fun and color to their kitchens with bright fruit bowls, cookbooks, cutting boards, and more.
The “cottagecore” style has taken off in the last year or two, and it’s not hard to see why. As we entered lockdowns and quarantines, we started looking for ways to make our homes cozy and comfortable. People took up knitting, baking, gardening, and other such home-making activities, and décor trends followed.
In 2022, cottagecore is going to continue to grow, with an emphasis on homes being cozy rather than minimalistic or impressive. Dreamy floral prints, rustic finishes, chalkboard paint, and natural wood will return to our spaces. In short, our homes will be the perfect place to knead a loaf of bread while wearing a flour sack apron in the golden afternoon sunshine.
Our world has seen a growing emphasis on sustainability in the last several years, and for good reason. The climate crisis has come to a head, and each of us is looking for ways to do our part for the planet. Those efforts are starting to show up in our homes, as well as our overall lifestyles.
These days, people are looking for furniture and décor that is both sustainable and ethically sourced. Some of that pandemic creativity has been channeled into recycling and upcycling old objects into new and improved décor, and some people are even finding ways to make their own furniture. The furniture that we do buy often comes from reclaimed materials or companies that focus on sustainable manufacturing.
While our preference for sustainable furniture is relatively modern, our taste in that décor is not. The last two years had made us all yearn for simpler times when life didn’t seem so hard and full of misery. That nostalgia is showing up in our homes as furniture designs trend back towards more classic styles.
We’re seeing more rolled-arm sofas, classic dining tables, and vintage pieces. People want décor that has a history and a story, and they’re starting to move back towards traditional materials. We’re beginning to see more wood, marble, and linen showing up in our homes as we look for ways to bring the past into the modern-day.
As the new year begins, you may be looking for ways to refresh your space. 2022 will be a year of returning to natural, nostalgic materials and décor styles and to our homes being places of comfort. We’ll see kitchens becoming more colorful, more green tones in homes, and an increased focus on sustainability in the coming year.
