Organizing Tips to Maximize the Closet Space in Your Summit Park Home

Door Handle to Closet

One of the many reasons people opt for a new home at Summit Park is because they need more space to accommodate their growing family and lifestyle.

That usually means things like:

• Extra bedrooms.

• Larger kitchen and dining room.

• Bigger family and entertainment areas.

It also extends to storage areas like closets and the upstairs pantry.

While your new home from Multi-Area Developments does come with an abundance of storage space, you still need to be smart about how you use it.

After all, it’s like that old saying: “There’s a place for everything, and everything has a place.”

              Declutter and purge

Moving is a great time to take stock of what you have and what you want to bring with you to your new home.

Whether it’s clothes for the bedroom closet, small appliances for the kitchen, or toys for the kids, not everything has to make the move with you.

As you make your way from room-to-room, you’ll want to organize your belongings in three piles:

• KEEP: This is quite obvious. Anything that ends up here will also end up at your new home.

• DONATE/SELL: You don’t have any use for items in this pile, but someone else might. You can donate it to a worthy cause or sell it to put some extra cash in your pocket.

• THROW AWAY: You don’t want it, and you can’t imagine anyone else wanting it either. Things in this pile are just going to clutter up your home. Might as well get rid of it.

Two things to keep note as you declutter and purge in advance of your move:

  • Firstly, you have to be absolutely ruthless. If there’s no sentimental value attached to a particular item, it has to end up in one of the categories mentioned above.
  • Secondly, you’ll be amazed at how much closet space you’ll have at your new place once you’ve cleared any odd and ends from your home.

Use the same type of hangers in your closet

There’s a good chance you have a variety of clothes hangers in your closet:

  • Wooden.
  • Fabric.
  • Thick plastic.
  • Metal.
Combo shirt/pant hanger.
They’re convenient and functional, but they also take up more room than necessary because they’re all different in size and thickness.

If you’re going to be purchasing new hangers for the new closets in your new home, select the type which works best for you and try to exclusively use those.

Install smart lighting

Usually, things stored at the back of the kitchen pantry or walk-in closet tend to get forgotten.

As a result, you could end up purchasing something you already have, whether it’s a dress shirt for work or ingredients for a favourite recipe.

Lights strategically placed throughout your storage areas allow you to see everything at once.

Not just for closets and pantry, convenient lighting can be incorporated into all storage spaces, such as:

  • Crawl space.
  • Tool shed.
  • Under the sink/under the counter storage.
  • Hallway closet.
It’s much easier to see everything when it’s brightly lit, as opposed to having half an area with adequate light and the other half with no light at all. Our décor consultants can assist you in strategically placing extra lighting in your new Summit Park home during your colour selection process.

Take advantage of off-site storage

Sometimes, you have things you want to keep, but not necessarily at your new Laguna Village home.

That’s why off-site storage from our sister company Multi Storage is a wise choice.

In particular, self-storage is ideal for seasonal items or things you only use occasionally, such as:
  • Holiday décor items.
  • Sporting Equipment.
  • Outdoor Gear.
  • Vehicles .
With personal storage, you get the best of all worlds:

  • Peace of mind knowing your belongings are safe and secure.
  • Convenient 24/7 access.
  • Extra room in your home to store what really matters.

Common storage mistakes to avoid

As you’re packing, moving, unpacking, and deciding where things should go, it’s easy to make some simple mistakes which may not seem major now, but could be problematic down the road:

  • Not labeling storage boxes or containers after they’ve been packed.
  • Keeping things “just in case” (as mentioned earlier in this blog, you’ve got to be ruthless).
  • Purchasing containers which are either too big or too small for what you need to store.
Perhaps the biggest mistake is storing things – no matter how small – in areas they shouldn’t go.

Take the front hall, for example. It’s meant to store shoes, jackets, and backpacks for the kids.

No matter how tempting, convenient, or quick it may seem, don’t store things like sporting goods or important personal documents in the front hall. They just don’t belong there.
